Grooming Policy updated July 2021 by Rebekah Smart, owner of Smart Dogs Services

Smart Dogs Services is a fairly relaxed salon but there are a few policies that we insist on to ensure the health and safety of all involved. Please note that by booking your dog in with Smart Dogs Services, you agree to all terms in this and future policies.

Arrival.

Please make sure that you are on time for your appointment. Arriving over 15 minutes late will result in your appointment having to be rebooked and a cancellation refund may apply.

If you know you will be over 15 minutes late, please message us to let us know so arrangements can be made. Alternatively, please book at a time you know you will be able to pick up and drop off without being late.

Please note that while COVID regulations have been relaxed by the government, only one person may drop off per appointment, and masks MUST be worn, covering mouth and nose, at all times (if you are medically exempt, please let us know in advance). Please avoid entering the salon where possible, your dog(s) will be collected at the gate, this is to ensure the salon has minimal traffic and less chance of COVID spreading.

Collection.

Once a message has been sent stating that your dog(s) is ready to be picked up, please let us know if you are going to be unable to collect your dog within the following 30 minutes. Of course, your dog will be taken care of while we wait for you, but in the event that you are more than 30 minutes late there will be a sitting charge applied.

If you know you will be over 30 minutes late, please let us know at drop off so arrangements can be made and an extended time may be given if possible.

Cancellation.

Smart Dogs requires a minimum of 24 hours notice to cancel any appointments. A set amount of time is reserved to groom your dog, and if notice is given less than 24 hours before the appointment, or if the appointment it missed, it may incur a cancellation fee of the total fee of the groom up to £20. As a small business, we unfortunately cannot afford to loose out on income for these appointments so please cancel in plenty of time if you cannot make it.

De-matting.

Normal grooming charges do not include de-matting. We understand that no owner deliberately lets their dog become matted, and that grooming a matted dog if difficult. Unfortunately due to the increase of matted dogs entering the salon a charge WILL be applied to dogs with matting to cover the time and cost of tools etc. in removing the matts.

By booking in with Smart Dogs Services you understand that ANY matting that requires more than 5 minutes of brushing / dematting WILL have the matt shaved out as persistent brushing causes undue stress and in some situations pain for the dog of which is unacceptable by moral standards, and by the The Animal Welfare Act 2006, which states that it is an OFFENCE to cause animals pain or discomfort.

Owners must understand that removing a matted coat can cause nicks, cuts, or abrasions. Matting can also trap moisture and urine near the dogs skin, allowing mould, fungus, or bacteria to grow, and / or reveal skin irritations that existed prior to the grooming process. After-effects of mat removal can include itchiness, redness, self-inflicted irritations or abrasions, and failure of hair to regrow. In some cases, dogs may also exhibit brief behavioural changes.

Smart Dogs is released of any liability associated with any and all injuries or medical problems that may be uncovered and / or occur during the stripping and de-matting process. Should your pet need veterinarian care after or during the process of de-matting, the owner agrees to pay any and all veterinarian fees.

Undercoat Removal / De-shedding.

In the event that ANY dog is found to have loose undercoat and is not in for a de-shedding treatment, Smart Dogs Services will remove it for the welfare and health of the dog as it can cause extreme irritation and not allow the skin to breath. This will incur an extra fee based on the size and type of dog if they are not booked in for a de-shedding treatment.

Ear Hair.

Ear hair may be required to be plucked / pulled / removed from any dog that requires it. In the case there is an ear inflection, the owner will be notified and be recommended to see a vet. Owners must understand that ear hair plucking can cause microscopic tears in the ear and cause infection.

Smart Dogs is released of any liability associated with any and all injuries or medical problems that may be uncovered and / or occur during the ear hair plucking process. Should your pet need veterinarian care after or during the process of ear hair plucking, the owner agrees to pay any and all veterinarian fees.

Flea / Tick Removal.

Smart Dogs DOES NOT remove ticks from dogs, if your dog has a tick you will be recommended to see a vet.

If your dog has fleas, there will be an extra charge dependant on size and type of dog. If your dog has recently had fleas within the past three months, you must let us know, removing fleas is time consuming and will need to be booked in with an extended amount of time.

Lead / Collars.

Please make sure your dog is wearing a correctly fitted collar and lead to avoid the risk of flight or accident while bringing your dog into the salon. Whilst in the salon, appropriate harness’ and hammocks will be used for the safety of your dog(s), eg. a harness rather than a noose will be used in the case of heavy leaning dogs to avoid applying too much pressure on their necks.

Aggressive Dogs.

If the dog has been known to be aggressive this should be stated during booking, and proof of up-to-date vaccinations must be shown prior to the start of grooming. The owner must bring a well fitting muzzle or allow the use of a muzzle on their dog for the entire time they are in the salon. If the groom has been started, but unable to be completed, the owner will be responsible for the full cost of the groom.

Smart Dogs will not groom any dogs under any circumstances that has had a sedative / anxiety medication / ect.

Senior Dogs.

Grooming can be stressful for any dog of any age, but it can be especially stressful for an older dog and comfort over style will be chosen.

Payment.

All payments must be made upon booking through our booking server. All our listed prices are base figures and do not include any additional fees that may be owed upon collection dependant on the statements listed in this policy.

Photography / Video.

Smart Dogs takes photos, and films all grooms for training and research purposes. All photos and videos remain the property of Smart Dogs Services and will NOT be sold to third parties. Occasionally photos/videos are used for training/research/advertising/promotion purposes off and online (various platforms).
